On the misty peaks of ancient Japan, the Blue Tengu is not the Tengu of fury. He is the Tengu of mystery. The spirit that watches from the heights, vanishing into the mist before you even realize he's there. Cold as the mountain air. As unpredictable as the mountain itself.
The Blue Tengu: Wisdom of the Heights
In Japanese mythology, the Tengu is a unique figure, neither entirely god nor entirely demon. Master of martial arts, guardian of sacred forests, he chooses his students from among the most worthy and imparts to them knowledge that ordinary people cannot acquire.
The blue on this mask is not the chaotic blue of the Ao-Oni. It is a deeper, colder blue: the blue of the mist that envelops the mountains at dawn, the blue of the sky just before a storm. A color that says the Tengu is above, and that you will only see him when he decides to.

The blue requires patience. Layers of paint are applied to achieve this depth, this feeling that the color lives and breathes with the light. I work with the contrasts between lighter areas and deeper recesses to accentuate each contour of the mask.
