The white one resists. The red one rises again. At some point, one of the two wins.

The Spirit of the Mask

In Noh theatre, white represents the first stage of Hannya—nascent, still human jealousy. Red represents full-blown rage, the demon that has consumed everything. This mask captures the moment between the two.

The thermal cracking technique reverses the usual logic: white is on the surface, and red rises through the fissures—as if the transformation were seeking an outlet, as if inner rage were fracturing the facade. The cracks are not decorative. They tell a story. The golden horns and teeth anchor the piece in the classical iconography of the Hannya. Everything else is in motion.

This is the most tense version of the Hannya collection — neither completely white nor completely red.

FAQ & Interview

How does the thermal crackle effect work?

The technique involves applying a red base coat, then a white layer on top using a crackle medium. As it dries, the white surface cracks, revealing the red underneath. Each piece is unique—the cracks never reproduce exactly the same way.

What is the difference between this and the Hannya White Vengeful Demon with black jet?

Both are on a white background, but the technique and effect are different. The Avenger has hand-applied black splatters. The Cracked Red White has a structured thermal effect—the cracks are regular and the red rises evenly across the surface.

How do I care for this mask?

Dust with a dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water and chemicals. The protective varnish ensures colorfastness indoors.
