Red burns. White holds. Blue, on the other hand, has already detached itself.

The Spirit of the Mask

In Noh theater, the Hannya tells the story of a woman's transformation into a demon—consumed by jealousy and betrayal until she crosses the threshold of humanity. Color signifies this state: white represents the beginning, red the full force of her rage. Blue represents something else entirely. Not in the classic gradation—it's a different interpretation, colder, more distant. The demon is no longer angry because she has moved on.

This mask adheres to the classic codes of theatrical Hannya: traditional proportions, golden horns, golden eyes, and an open mouth revealing sharp fangs. A bright, clear blue covers the entire mask—not a dark or metallic blue, but a vibrant blue that contrasts with the gold of the horns and eyes. It's the same piece as the Red Aka and the White, but with a radically different feel.

FAQ & Interview

Does blue correspond to a stage of possession in Noh theatre?

Not in the classic gradation—which goes from white to light red, Aka red, then black. Blue is a contemporary interpretation of Hannya, outside of the traditional codification. It functions as a color in its own right, not as a degree of possession.

What is the difference between the White Hannya and the Red Aka?

Same model, same dimensions, same construction. The three form a cohesive collection — cool and restrained white, raw and intense red, bright and striking blue. The lugs are gold on all three versions.

How do I care for this mask?

Dust with a dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid water and chemicals. The protective varnish ensures colorfastness indoors.
