The black Hannya is not the one who still suffers. He is the one who has gone to the very end, the one whose humanity has completely vanished, consumed by rage and grief. This Kezurata goes further: its surface is not smooth. It is carved, scratched, marked. As if the pain had left its mark directly on the material.
The Black Hannya: Beyond Suffering
In Noh theatre, the colour of the Hannya describes the state of the woman transformed into a demon:
- White: nascent jealousy, still human
- Light red: active suffering, between two worlds
- Red Aka: total rage, humanity consumed
- Black: absolute possession, pure demonic entity
Kezurata adds a dimension that color alone cannot convey. The hollows and reliefs evoke the marks of time, anger, and metamorphosis. It is not a mask one looks at, but a mask one feels.

Handmade in Brittany
Matte black on sculpted texture is what I find most challenging to achieve. Every recess becomes a trap for light—if the paint isn't well applied in the corners, it's immediately noticeable. I take the time necessary to ensure that each relief is highlighted, not lost.
