There is a stage that Noh theatre rarely depicts. Neither the nascent jealousy of the white character, nor the unbridled rage of the red. An intermediate, unstable territory, where the woman is no longer entirely human but not yet entirely a demon. Blue represents this suspended moment. The transformation in progress.
The Blue Hannya: a rare stadium
In the tradition of Noh theatre, the colour of the Hannya tells the story of the state of transformation:
- White: nascent jealousy, still human
- Blue: in-between, transformation underway
- Light red: active suffering, tipping point initiated
- Red Aka: total rage, humanity consumed
- Black: absolute possession, pure demonic entity
Blue belongs to neither world. It is the most difficult state to maintain, and the most fascinating to behold.
Kezurata amplifies this interpretation: the reliefs and hollows sculpted into the surface express what color alone cannot. A transformation that is visible in the material.

Applying blue to sculpted textures is a delicate exercise. The color must remain vibrant without overwhelming the relief, allowing the hollows to breathe so that the depth of the Kezurata remains legible. I work in progressive layers so that the blue never appears flat.
