The sky tears open. The drums resound. Raijin doesn't warn—he strikes. God of thunder, lightning, and rain, he is one of the most feared and revered forces in the Shinto pantheon. Not because he is evil—but because he is uncontrollable. This mask embodies that force, in red.
What is the Red Raijin Mask?
The Red Raijin Mask is a full-face Japanese mask depicting Raijin—the god of thunder, lightning, and rain in Japanese Shinto mythology. Traditionally represented in red with a crown of taiko drums, Raijin is an ambivalent figure: terrifying in his power, yet essential to the fertility of the harvest. Made of High-Strength Polymer (PETG), hand-painted in my Breton workshop.
Raijin: The God Farmers Feared and Prayed
In Shinto mythology, Raijin is one of the oldest gods—born from the decay of Izanami in the underworld, he rules the most violent elements of the sky. His iconography is instantly recognizable: a red or dark body, a furious expression, surrounded by a circle of taiko drums which he strikes to produce thunder.
But Raijin is not just a destroyer. Without rain, there is no harvest. Japanese farmers prayed to him as much as they feared him—it is this ambivalence that makes him so fascinating.
Attribute Meaning Red body Fury, explosive energy, divine power Taiko drums Source of thunder—each strike is a blow from the heavens Demonic expression Oni—wild and uncontrollable nature Accompanies Fujin Thunder and wind are always linked
His eternal companion is Fujin—the god of wind. In Japanese tradition, one doesn't go without the other. That's why I also created the Raijin & Fujin Duo Pack for those who want both.

Step What I Do 3D Printing High-definition PETG — oni expression, facial volumes, every detail preserved Sanding By hand, perfectly smooth surface before painting Primer Even base for vibrant red Paint Intense acrylic red in multiple layers — I work on depth and shadows to avoid a flat red Details Facial features painted with a fine brush Varnish Final protection, matte finish Checking Verification under different lighting before shipping
Raijin red is not the same red as Hannya or a classic Oni. It's a red meant to evoke electric energy, the heat of lightning — vivid, saturated, with deep shadows in the hollows of the face to accentuate the furious expression. I work with values to make the mask vibrate, not be static.
If you're curious about my choice of PETG, I explain everything here: Why I work with PETG.

How to display it
On its own, Raijin immediately commands attention — the red color draws the eye even before the subject is identified. A raking light from above accentuates the facial features and gives the piece a dramatic presence. The effect is particularly striking against a dark wall.
Its natural place is alongside Fujin — together they recreate the iconic pair from Japanese temples. For a more understated presentation, the Hōju Stand is its perfect complement.
Complete your collection
To get the complete pair at the best price, the Raijin & Fujin Duo Pack is €234 instead of €260 when purchased separately. And if you want to explore other gods of the Japanese pantheon, the Fudo Myō-ō Mask offers equally powerful energy—unrelenting wisdom in the face of thunderous fury.
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between Raijin and a classic Oni mask?
A: Raijin has an oni appearance—red body, furious expression—but it is not a demon in the strict sense. It is a Shinto god, a divine nature force. The oni aesthetic conveys its wild and uncontrollable power, not an evil nature.
Q: Can I buy Raijin on its own without Fujin?
A: Yes, this mask stands perfectly well on its own. But Raijin and Fujin form an inseparable pair in Japanese tradition—if you want both, the Duo Pack is €234 instead of €260.
Q: What is the production time?
A: Each mask is made to order in my workshop in Brittany. Please allow 14 business days before shipping. I can send you a photo before shipping if you wish.
Raijin is one of the gods who has most influenced me through my studies—this ambivalence between terror and necessity says a lot about how Japan perceives natural forces. Explore the entire Dai Yokai collection—each piece tells a story.
