Description
This mask combines the horned outline of a Hannya with a fully skeletal face. Its open eye sockets, exposed teeth and four horns around the jaw give it a skull-like appearance distinct from a traditional Hannya mask.
The silver base is shaded to bring out the sculpted relief and contrasted by black horns, fangs and teeth. Each piece is sanded, prepared and hand-painted in my workshop in Brittany, France. Small variations in texture, shading and painted details can therefore appear from one piece to another.
The name “Gashadokuro Hannya” describes the skeletal look of this contemporary piece. It is not presented as a reproduction of a traditional Japanese mask or as an exact historical depiction of a Gashadokuro.
