The Oni collection

This collection brings together contemporary interpretations of Japanese figures. Oni belong to folklore; Raijin and Fujin are the gods of thunder and wind. The Gawara designs draw on the faces found on some onigawara roof tiles.

Hannya is a specific type of Noh theatre mask, associated with a female character transformed by jealousy or resentment. The Oni and Hannya comparison explains the distinction. You can also explore the workshop’s Hannya masks.

Understand before choosing

Full-face or half mask. A Mempo half mask covers the lower face. Full-face designs extend around the forehead and horns. Compare the outline, depth and space available on your wall or shelf.

Three examples of external dimensions. Height × width × depth, in cm:
Oni Mempo: 13.0 × 18.5 × 13.2;
Irezumi: 30.1 × 23.6 × 15.9;
Fujin: 24.3 × 21.0 × 13.4.
Height and width help you plan wall space; depth matters for a shelf display. Check the individual product pages for other models.

One mask or a duo. The Raijin/Fujin, Ondeko and Gawara duo listings offer one mask or both together. For the Oni Mempo, the plain or gold teeth finish changes the price. Select an option on the product page to see its price. The Mempo starting price applies to that half mask, rather than a full-face design.

Questions about Oni masks

Can these masks be worn?

Wear depends on the design and your face. The Irezumi can be worn briefly, but its sculpted tongue makes speaking difficult. Before choosing a model for a convention or cosplay, check its openings, fastening, weight and field of vision. External dimensions do not guarantee a suitable fit or comfort over time. The photos of masks being worn show examples.

Are cords and stands included?

The Oni Mempo and Irezumi product pages specify an included cord. Check each other listing for what is supplied. Stands are optional extras. An accessory shown in a photograph is not necessarily supplied with the mask.

Does each colour have a fixed meaning?

No. Colour traditions vary by place and context. Dai Yokai finishes also reflect contemporary painting choices. Choose from the model’s available options for the contrasts and mood you want.
