The world of Japanese masks

Dai Yokai workshop
Handmade in Brittany
I work alone in my workshop in Brittany. Each mask starts with a 3D-printed PETG base, then I handle the sanding, primer, paint, varnish and finishing by hand.
Frequently asked questions
Which Japanese mask should I choose for wall decoration?
For a wall, a tattoo studio or a shop window, go for volume and visual presence: large Oni, Hannya and Tengu masks command the space, while Kitsune use finer lines. Choose according to the width, depth and viewing distance available.
What is the difference between Oni, Hannya, Kitsune, Tengu and Mempo?
The Oni is the horned ogre of Japanese folklore. In Nō theater, the Hannya represents a female figure transformed by jealousy, rage and suffering. The Kitsune is the fox and can, depending on the context, act as a messenger of Inari. The Tengu is recognized by its long nose or crow beak. The Mempo is a half mask covering the lower face, inherited from samurai armor.
Are Dai Yokai masks handmade?
Yes. The base is 3D printed in my workshop, then everything else is done by hand: sanding, priming, painting, detailing and varnishing. These steps explain the slight variations from one piece to the next: every mask is unique.
Can Dai Yokai masks be worn?
Part of the collection is wearable, especially the Mempo half masks and articulated models, often used at conventions and for cosplay. The others are designed for display. If you plan to wear one, check the openings and fixing system specified for that model before choosing.
What material are the masks made of?
The base is printed in PETG, a strong and lightweight plastic that is more resistant to impact and heat than PLA. It is then sanded, painted and varnished by hand.
How do you display a Japanese mask?
Hang it on the wall with a fixing suited to the model, or place it on a compatible stand for a shelf display. Avoid damp rooms, direct heat and prolonged full sun so the varnish and pigments keep their depth. A dry microfiber cloth is all you need for upkeep.
How long does preparation take before shipping?
For a made-to-order piece, allow no more than 3 weeks before shipping. This covers printing, painting, drying, finishing and packing. Carrier transit time is added afterwards.
