About this piece
The traditional Tengu mask is my reference version of the Dai-Tengu, the Great Tengu with a human face and long nose. Red is its most common colour in Japanese iconography, the colour of mountain spirits tied to the yamabushi ascetics.
Where it comes from
The Tengu (天狗) is a mountain yokai, both protective and terrifying, tied to the martial arts. Legend says Miyamoto Musashi learned his techniques from a Tengu. The bright red reflects its nature as an uncontrollable force.

Red, the canonical colour, white or blue. Each is hand-painted and varies slightly.
